Weekend Special: Current thoughts on Warbreaker

This post will definitely contain spoilers.  If you’ve not read Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker I would strongly urge you to skip this post.

-------

I am currently on Chapter 36.  Wow.  That’s really about all I can say right now, especially considering the events that just happened in the previous chapter.  All along I’ve really liked the mercenaries, but I honestly have to say I suspected something like this.  Definitely not exactly like what happened, but that they were more sinister than they appeared.  I still wonder about Denth’s past.  I’m looking forward to Vivenna learning how to use her Breath.

I’m really curious to learn more about Vasher, too.  There have been only a few short pages devoted to him and it’s driving me crazy.  Is he bad?  Is he good?  Is he apathetic?  What the heck’s up with that sword?  All in due time I’ll find out, I suppose.

I really like the turn of events for Siri and Susebron.  I find their relationship sweet and enjoyable, and I’ve laughed a bit, too, at the God Kings’ naïveté.  I’m not sure what will happen to Susebron and I don’t know how to guess.  Hopefully he doesn’t die.

Lightsong is still getting on my nerves, though not as much as earlier in the book.  I still think his character is really weak and annoying.  His quest to learn more about his past is slightly interesting, but his involvement with Blushweaver is eye-rolling.  So is Blushweaver, for that matter.  I’m sure the Returned will play a crucial part in whatever is going to happen, but so far I could care less for any of them.  If Lightsong would just stop acting like an immature, flippant, uncaring person then I’d be happy.

I like the mystery and secrecy with all the priests and servants, too.  Not sure really what’s going to happen with them or who to trust, but I pretty much don’t trust Scoot.  Surely he can’t care about Lightsong.

Anyway, these are my thoughts.  If you’ve read the book, chime in.  If not, I hope you didn’t read this post and that you aren’t reading this paragraph.

Oh, oh, I'm back but I don't have time to read and reply tonight but I will be catching up on your blog as soon as I can! Sorry, I had a death in the family :( Death is a heart breaker for sure. It has really been a rough week so any prayers you can throw to my family would be great :)

Yeah, I was wondering this same thing when Vivenna was talking of Clod. I was wondering if there's still a part of his soul left and maybe he's starting to have feelings for his human friends/masters. I'm kind of hoping that maybe there is more to Clod, and I wonder if he will continue to show human emotions (maybe do something that wasn't a command?).

Denth is a character we need to watch out for, Vivenna is always seeing two sides of him it seems. The one look she describes is the look of a dangerous and threatening man, but then she also sees the look of a good soul hiding underneath at times. There has been some bad times in his past that may catch up to him in the future it seems. I'm so curious to know what will happen once Vasher and Denth meet there seems to be a lot of hostility between them and business left unfinished. I wonder if in the end they will work together, or how this will play out if Vasher is not their evil force.

But I can feel you seeing it. Crimson. Like blood in the air.
Vasher didn't respond. The sword couldn't see. But with its powerful, twisted BioChroma, it could sense life and people. Both were things Nightblood had been created to protect. It was strange, how easily and quickly protection could cause destruction. Sometimes, Vasher wondered if the two weren't really the same thing. Protect a flower, destroy the pests who wanted to feed on it. Protect a building, destroy the plants that could have grown in the soil.
Protect a man. Live with the destruction he creates.

Nightblood is an interesting character he does seem to only want to kill, but his mind is more like a child's. I'm thinking your right that if they're threatening him or his owner is who his "child like mind" sees as evil. This is a very interesting paragraph it seems to be giving us a lot of information on how Nightblood and Vasher see things. I'm not thinking that Vasher is evil but after something and maybe trying to undo something that caused destruction? "Protect a man. Live with the destruction he creates." This seems like a pretty important and more personal statement and maybe this holds some truth for Vasher.

Mercenaries--- oh, wow! I knew that we were going to see something from these guys but it was a surprise to me at how evil they truly were. The question I have is who do you guys think is behind hiring them? The priest or one of the Gods? It seems that Lightsong has found out that Mercystar's priests are finding a new way in the court through tunnels?! But then Blushweaver really wants all these soldiers to go to war, so at this point I want to say if it's not the Priest then it will be Blushweaver. Even Lightsong isn't quite sure what Blushwaver is up to and wanted to give his Lifeless to Allmother, so it seems he trusts her more. So my guess right now - from the information we have now - is that Blushweaver (she seems to know all about the princess Vivenna and the mess she made?!) is behind hiring the Mercenaries, she seems, to me, to want this war badly.

You know, I think it's pretty safe to say that Denth and Vasher will end up having it out in the end. Something will have to happen to the mercenaries now that this whole fiasco has happened and his secret is out to Vivenna. These are our evil men but the one they are working for is probably the bigger threat right now.

I also wonder what will happen with Clod because Vivenna keeps seeing this desperate look in his eyes like some of his soul is still there wanting to help her (and he did). I wonder if there's going to be another moment like this with Clod or if we've seen the last of him.

@Krista: Wow! I forgot all about the human-ish side of Clod. Maybe the lifeless are like the koloss and they are trying to associate themselves with humanity again? I also really want to know more about the Scholars and what led up to the Manywar. Great discussion questions. You've got my mind wondering about Clod now...
