Random Meanderings: Books, Concerts, and Questions

1.  Is the word "suck" socially accepted now?  I know it's ingrained in my vernacular, but still, when I use it around my boss or the pastor, it seems strange?  The first time I heard my grandmother say it I nearly died.

2.  Anybody else have trouble spelling beaurau beaureau beureau *spell check* bureau?  Gets me every time.

3.  If you take a vacuum cleaner and put the hose in your mouth and turn it on would it kill you?  What if you plugged up your nose and then did it?  Cause I imagine your lungs and stuff getting sucked up or going crazy.

4.  Don't you hate it when you wake up and your ear feels like it's got water in it?

5.  Is there a rule that says once one vehicle messes up, then the other one is doomed to the same fate?

6.  Even though I've had Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings since its release date, it's been sitting on the shelf just waiting for me to pick it up ever since.  It's not that I don't want to read it, but I want to read it when I can fully devote time and attention to Sanderson's awesomeness.  It seems like a waste, but just knowing I have it now means I got all the time in the world.

7.  So, if a ____ and a _ ___ go to the ______ for ______, then ____ slips _ ____ a ____, what would happen?  I mean, it'd have to be messy, right?

8.  The great debate of what to read next is here.  I have so many things I really want to read, I just don't know where to go.  Ken Scholes' Lamentation has been waiting very patiently; I got a fresh stack of Hellboy's to devour; I'm feeling like a good classic, maybe One Hundred Years of Solitude or The Brothers Karamazov; non-fictional Truman Capote's In Cold Blood has been beating on my brain's door, and so has Abraham's The Long Price Quartet; oh, and the twenty issues or so of Fables to cram in 'ere issue #100 hits shelves later this month.  Instead of all of these, I've picked up Charles Portis' True Grit, a novel that's been in my possession for so long I don't remember when I first tried to read it, and a review copy of sci-fi webzine Residential Aliens #4.

9.  It's good to have Conan O'Brien back doing what he does best: being awesome.

10.  I'm going to St. Louis this weekend to see Iron & Wine in concert.  It's been a while since my last concert, and I'm super excited about this one.

11.  I'm thinking about entering io9's Environmental Writing Contest.  Click here for info.

12.  Yeah, I've already got my HP7 midnight tickets for the imax.  Can't wait.

Iron & Wine concert?!

sorry, did you say anything before or after that?

i can't believe your TBR list, sounds awesome, I can see the dilemma..
_________ does sound messy.

and please don't experiment with the vacuum cleaner cause it may go bad.. though for the sake of science and if you realize it will clear out your sinuses without killing you, let me know.

#1 - IMO, "suck" is socially accepted, but I try to avoid saying it.

#3 - I wouldn't try it, but inquiring minds would like to know...

#6 - I went to a book signing of TWoK and I haven't purchased it, let alone read it yet. But I am on the waiting list to get it from my local library.

#10- Nice! I haven't had the chance to see them yet. Should be a great show.

#11 - Do it!!!!

#12 - Also nice! Not sure if I'm going to catch the midnight showing, but I definitely plan on seeing HP7 in the theaters.

@L: Indeed, Iron & Wine! I can't express just how much anticipation I have for the event. Enough that I'm driving 3.5 hours to see the show, so that's saying something.

@Crystal: I can't miss the midnight show. They're so much fun. Sure, I'll be beat at work the next day, but it's HARRY POTTER. Surely everyone will understand?

I read on Wertzone that a new Mistborn novel is coming out in 2011, and it will bridge the gap between the first trilogy and the new trilogy that Sanderson will write for it. Let's see if the link will work here: http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2010/11/new-mistborn-novel-in-2011.html

Have fun traveling while you can! Once the baby arrives, the traveling will likely be on hold indefinitely...

I'd be curious to see what you think of the Long Price Quartet. I read the first in the series and was quite underwhelmed. Then again, I'm pretty hard to please...

@Dave: Aye, I saw that on the Wertzone the other day. I follow his blog, as well as Sanderson's, and from their posts I'm quite excited about this little novella.

Underwhelmed, you say? From what I've read, TLPQ is a highly underrated series that's quite remarkable. I've bought the first two books, just hoping it's as good as I'm hoping it to be. Only time will tell, eh?

Dude, I gotta go with Lamentation. One of the best pieces of genre fiction I've read in a long time.

On a side note, they just shot the remake of True Grit here in Austin. For what it's worth.

I don't like using the word "suck" in certain situations. It seems... inappropriate.

I've taught myself to read faster, and I'm really enjoying the volume of material I'm able to get through this way. Right now I'm dividing my time between "Y: The Last Man" and a book on screenwriting.

See ya, Logan.

@Kris: Thanks for the recommendation. I'll get to Lamentation one of these days.

Hope you like Y: The Last Man. I read the entire series last year. Pretty awesome.
