I Currently Am Not Reading...

...The Wise Man's Fear right now, even though I've had it pre-ordered for ages and ages and fully expected a shipping confirmation this morning.  Instead, looking on the Borders.com website at my order details I see two alarming words:

On Backorder

How can my book be "On Backorder" if I freaking pre-ordered it?  I'm extremely tempted to purchase another copy elsewhere just so I can read it now, but there's a possibility that I'll have to buy another copy at the signing next Friday, and I don't think I need three hardcover copies of this book, nor do I really have the funds for such an extraneous purchase.  Grrrr.  Patience.  Patience.  But what if it stays backordered for a long time?  Or what if I don't get a first edition, first printing?  Or what if, heaven forbid, I have to wait another month?!

Oh the humanity!  Whatever shall I do?

I feel your pain, I feel your frustration. I just checked Amazon, and they do not say anything about backorder over there. I did not pre-order because I am not certain if I need to buy a copy at the signing or not. How do you find that info out? Do you know? How does one get the first printing, first edition anyway? Isn't that sort of out of your hands?

You should be patient. Three copies; nope you do not need. Or, how about you cancel your border's order and place one with Amazon. Or, how about calling the border's store to see if you have to buy a copy at the store the day of the signing?

If I am antsy to read this book, then you must be ten times as much!!

If it's Joseph-Beth in Lexington, KY, you do not have to purchase a copy of the book in order to get a line ticket. Line tickets are free. Granted, if you wait until the day of the signing to show up and pick up a line ticket, you'll likely get a letter pretty far down the alphabet.

And I don't know if you can get a ticket earlier... That's something a few friends have asked about. I know they wouldn't let you do it while they were taking pre-orders.

Me, I pre-ordered the book from JoBeth and got my line ticket already. But I payed a higher price there than if I'd gone to Amazon.com or something.

Sorry to hear about your luck, Logan. :(

I should be getting mine today in the mail, woo! I'll be sure to post hourly updates on how good it is! Muahahaha!

Seriously, though, perhaps you could read another good book in the interim. Like, say, the Heroes! A terrific read.

Let's see here. If it were me, I would ask for my money back. You pre-ordered for a reason and Borders failed to deliver. I'd then go buy it somewhere else.

As for first editions and first printing? They all read the same, bro. Don't worry about it.

Good luck!

@ibeeeg: Yeah, you can call the bookstore or check Pat's blog post that deals with the signing FAQ. As for 1st1st, that info is on the copyright page in the front. It'll say and there'll be little numbers (usually 1-10 unless the book's old), and whichever's the smallest number is the printing #. Edition is simply stated.

@Jay: Thank heavens. I've tried to get that specific info, but nobody I've talked to has been able to say that to me. I don't care what letter I get so long as I get to get the book signed.

@Dave: Please do. Could you also manually type out each page and send it to me as individual emails? Alas, The Heroes has been in my possession for over a month now and I've not started it because of other reading obligations, and it's due back at the library in a few days. That's coming up soon, though.

@Kris: Indeed, friend, they do read the same, but my relationship with Pat is something special to me. I just happened upon his book on my honeymoon, shortly after it was released, and my copy I bought is 1st1st, which I then mailed to him in WI and had it signed. It's been read and passed along between many different people and I cherish it. I also will cherish getting a 1st1st for WMF. Any other book, any other author and I wouldn't give a flip, but Pat takes priority...

Thanks for the kindness everyone.

I bought my copy last night because Pat was in Seattle doing a book signing!! I got there about a half hour early and the bookstore was packed with a few hundred people. I had to stand way in the back of the store, but I had a view of Pat's floating head. I hung out for 2 hours after he started signing books and the line barely moved. There was priority signing for people who bought the book on site, but just about everyone bought the book at the bookstore. I was fighting a cold and needed to get some sleep, so I left without meeting him and getting a signature. Sigh, maybe next time he comes thru Seattle. Oh, and Nathan Taylor was also there last night signing copies of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle.

Hope you get your book soon!! If the book you receive isn't a 1st1st, I would be willing to trade you mine, because I don't really care what edition it it.

Bummer, Crystal! Well, at least you got the book.

Logan, if it's any consolation, I still haven't got mine in the mail yet.... maybe March 3rd will be the happy day...

@Crystal: At least you got to see that magnificent head bobbing in the crowd and his his hypnotic voice, eh.

Hope all's going well for you. Enjoy the book!

@Dave: Muahahahahahahahahaha! I bought another copy yesterday (I forgot I had a BAM giftcard, so I didn't use real moneys!)
